Short internship as assistant director for The Factory Theatre Company’s production of Julius Caesar in London.
The Factory’s productions are characterized by their truthfulness to the moment. Their performances have the potential to be radically different each night, due to the significance given to acknowledging the moment’s circumstances, and to continuous switching up of part allocation throughout the tour. Rehearsals for Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, therefore, focused not on blocking of scenes, but on authenticity in acting, staying true to the classical text whilst also challenging the company to question their cohort’s characters through exercises to achieve higher believability of performance.
My responsibilities as an assistant director included organisational tasks such as part allocation for the tour and PR suggestions; taking active part in text analysis and company exercises; and taking notes of any significant questions and discoveries during rehearsals.
